DEPTFORD
X 2007 @ FRAMEWORK STUDIOS and DEPTFORD DESIGN FESTIVAL
@ COCKPIT ARTS September 2007
D=f(m,b,c)
In 2005,
Deptford High Street came top of the table
as the city's most interesting high street.
A mathematical formula was devised for Yellow
Pages to measure diversity: D = f (m, b, c),
where m is a wide mix of businesses, b the
availability of everyday goods, and c the presence
of a large number of businesses selling the
same kind of thing.
FiveToNine wanted to comment on this idea...
Indeed, on Deptford High Street there are
16 grocers selling bananas, you may find
the same plastic bowls in 9 pound shops,
you can make a bet in 6 bookies, buy fish
in 8 places, get your hair done at 12 salons,
and pick up a wig at 6 beauty outlets.
A proliferation of wigs and bananas and endless sodding
pound shops led to the images being given
a Warhol makeover, thus referencing ideas
of consumerism, mass production and the glamorisation
of everyday objects. |
